However, meeting specific criteria is essential for international students to qualify for a PGWP:
- Graduation from a designated learning institution (DLI), whether public, private, or secondary/post-secondary in Quebec, with programs leading to degrees, diplomas, or certificates.
- Provision of transcripts and official letters confirming program completion.
- Completion of studies in academic, vocational, or professional training programs lasting a minimum of eight months.
- Maintenance of full-time student status throughout the program.
- Enrollment in programs recognized by provincial laws, meeting degree authorization requirements.
In the near future, Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) plans to adjust spousal work permit rules for international students at the undergraduate level. Once implemented, spouses of master’s and doctoral students will be eligible for spousal work permits, while spousal open work permits for Canadian citizens or permanent residents remain unaffected.
It’s crucial to note a forthcoming change effective September 2024: Students enrolled in programs utilising a curriculum licensing framework, where private colleges deliver public college curricula, will no longer qualify for PGWPs.
